Automation, Information Engineering and Management in Chemistry and Food Industry

Study programme annotation: The accredited Bachelor level study programme of Automation, Information Engineering and Management in Chemistry and Food Industry is intended for those who are interested in technical and engineering studies with an in-depth knowledge of chemistry, information technology, computers, management and economics. A graduate of the study programme has received training in the deployment and use of automation in the technology industry, the application of information technology, management from the simplest processes to the management of enterprises, also with the basic knowledge about the technology of chemical and food industries. The graduates of this study programme are included among those who are best placed to make a career not only in the chemical and food industries but also in other sectors of the economy and research.
A graduate has got knowledge in automation: methods for modelling technological processes, control of technological processes, optimisation, measurement and control technology, industrial control systems, planning and designing automatic control systems.
In the area of information technology, the graduate has got knowledge of: computer operating systems (Microsoft, Linux, Solaris), programming languages (C, MATLAB, PHP), database systems, web technology, office software packages.
In the area of economics and management, the graduate has got knowledge of: the essentials of the economic theory, theory of management, economics and business management, the essentials of logistics, corporate finance and financial management, human resource management and quality management.

Careers of graduates: Graduates can continue at master level in the same or similar study programs. Universality of this study program makes possible for the graduate to be employed in all countries of the European Union in chemical, biochemical, and food industries at positions requiring completed education of the first degree. The graduate can focus on methods of process modelling, process control, optimization, instrumentation, industrial control systems, and design of process automation systems. He has above average knowledge in information technologies of computer operating systems, programming languages, database systems, and web technologies. He is versatile due to the knowledge in economics and management, economics theory, control theory, business economy and management, logistics, financial management, personal management and quality management. Therefore, he can find employment in lower management positions.

Study programme annotation: The bachelor’s degree study program provides to students fundamental knowledge and laboratory skills in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, bioanalytical methods, xeno-biochemistry, and chemistry of food. Student has possibilities to be familiar with chemical engineering, fermentation and food biotechnology, biotechnological information, food chemistry, hygiene and health prevention, and toxicology. A part of the study program is focused on laboratory research practice in a particular area. Students can choose fermentative production of organic acids, lipids, pigments, beer, wine or bioethanol fermentation, environmental or pharmaceutical biotechnology, transformation of saccharides, production of metabolites for pharmaceutical, medical or food purposes, as well as genetic manipulations. This bachelor's degree program provides graduates to be adaptable when employed either in industrial, laboratory and private practice or to continue in the next study.

Graduate has fundamental knowledge of the key disciplines of natural sciences and a technical view on the gathered skills when applied in industrial, medical and laboratory practice. Graduate masters the methods for cultivation of microorganisms, preparation, isolation and analyse of metabolites and the fundamental principles, methods and working techniques employed in various types of chemical, microbiological, biochemical, genetic, environmental, and bioanalytical laboratories. Knowledge obtained in fermentation, food and pharmaceutical biotechnologies can be applied in biotechnological production. Graduate is able to manage the technical personnel of the laboratories with secondary education, is able to understand at least one world language, has skills to operate basic PC applications and the practical aspects of information technologies, with main scientific, social, economic, commercial and ethical issues associated with development and expansion of the biotechnology, principal knowledge of management, law and economy.

Careers of graduates: Graduate from the bachelors’ degree has an appropriate qualification for further master studies in successive or related study programs, or may be employed in the fields of the industry, science and marketing areas. The knowledge obtained during the study provides the graduate the opportunity to be employed in chemical, biotechnological, fermentation, pharmaceutical, environmental, food and beverage industries, or in research in a position, which requires an undergraduate degree. Graduate may be employed also in the fields of development, production, analysis, storage and sale of various chemical products and materials, food, beverages and bio-fuels. The understanding of the physical principles of various analytical and diagnostic techniques enables the graduate to work as the operator of clinical equipments in hospitals. The skills in technical terminology and the language training enable the graduate to find an application in the sectors dealing with product certification, environmental monitoring, hygiene, metrology, or technical translation.
